What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse can include, but is not limited to:
- physical abuse
- emotional, psychological, and mental abuse
- sexual abuse
- coercive control (a pattern of intimidation, degradation, isolation, and control with the use, or threat, of physical or sexual violence)
- financial abuse
- verbal abuse
- religious and spiritual abuse
- honour-based violence
- forced marriage
- female genital mutilation (FGM)
- stalking and harassment
- online and digital abuse
Domestic abuse can happen between adults who are or have been intimate partners or between family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. It can impact anyone at any time.

Men can call the Men’s Advice Line on 0808 8010 327 for non-judgemental information and support. (Monday and Wednesday, 9 am to 8 pm, and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.) Alternatively, you can call ManKind on 0182 3334 244 (Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm)
If you identify as LGBT+, call Galop on 0800 999 5428 for emotional and practical support.
For forced marriage and honour crimes, call Karma Nirvana on 0800 5999 247 (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm). Alternatively, you can speak to the government’s Forced Marriage Unit on 020 7008 0151.

Refuge
We work in a psychologically informed way across our services. This means we consider individual needs and focus on what’s important to people to create positive, sustainable futures.
In our refuges, we support mothers and children to process what’s happened and help them build a positive future.

Safer Accommodation
As part of the Safe Accommodation Project we work across Merseyside to provide secure accommodation in several locations to support anyone aged over 18 impacted by Domestic Abuse regardless of sex, gender or family set up.
We provide:
- 8 units of semi-supported safe accommodation for single women
- 15 community properties for females with children
- 2 community properties for males with children fleeing Domestic Abuse
In addition, we provide a service for people who are rough sleeping, homeless or at risk of homelessness and who have or are experiencing domestic abuse or other violence, including sexual violence. This service provides eight units for women and two units for men.
