The post holder will be based at YMCA Sefton Nursery responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Early Years Setting in the absence of the Early Years Manager whilst being included in the child: staff ratios providing support for children with additional needs
The Deputy Early Years Manager/SENCO will be part of and supervise a team of Early Years Practitioners to implement the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) policy and procedures and ensure they understand their responsibility to meet individual children’s needs. The SENCO will work closely with children, colleagues, parents, and other professionals. The SENCO will work closely with the setting manager to ensure that Nursery is inclusive and accessible for all children. The Deputy Early Years Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Early Years setting in the absence of the Early Years Manager
Hours of work
The post holder will be working Monday to Friday during the hours of 8-6.
Duties and responsibilities
- ensuring all practitioners in the setting understand their responsibilities to children with SEN and the setting’s approach to identifying and meeting SEN
- advising and supporting colleagues
- ensuring parents are actively involved throughout and that their insights inform action taken by the setting,
- liaise with professionals or agencies beyond the setting
- work with the manager of the setting to regularly review the SEN and disability policy and practice within the setting and agree how it will be implemented.
- be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the setting’s SEN policy, and for coordinating provision across the setting.
- implement SEN support and the graduated approach of: assess, plan, do, review (learning and development plans and next steps) to meet the outcomes identified for the child
- support individual practitioners in implementing the approach for individual children.
- maintain records on your key children’s development.
- draw on a range of sources, including the views of the child, supported by reliable evidence of effectiveness, to inform their advice and support to colleagues on different approaches to improving children’s progress.
- To work with parents and manager to identify children eligible for DAF (Disability Access Fund) and identify resources to be purchased with the funding to best support the child’s needs.
- To be proactive in always safeguarding all children.
- Undertake the managers key roles in her absence e.g., being the safeguarding lead, taking payments and communicating with parents, overseeing ratios, and upholding key policies.

- To be proactive in always safeguarding all children by committing to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults who use the organisation’s services by being aware policies and procedures regarding Child Protection, being aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse by attending relevant courses, reporting all causes for concern to the Child Protection Officer, ensuring the safety of all pupils in the Nursery environment both indoor and outdoor and carrying out risk assessments in consultation with the teaching staff prior to activities.

- Prepare for and attend supervision and annual appraisal with your line manager taking direction as appropriate and contributing to the development of both yourself and the service.
Person Specification – Early Years Deputy Manager
Qualifications – Essential
- Childcare qualification level 3 or above.
- Comfortable with the use of computers and IT including Microsoft Office 365
Qualifications – Desirable
- Have worked in childcare settings for 5+ years.
- Training/ qualifications in any area of supporting children with additional needs/ Role of the SENCO
Experience – Essential
- Experience of working with children aged birth to 4 years
- Some experience of working with Children with additional needs.
Experience – Desirable
- Some understanding of the SEN code of practise.
- 3 years+ supporting children with additional needs.
- Writing applications for EHCP’s (Educational Health and Care Plan)
- Writing learning and development plans/ next steps for individual children.
Knowledge – Essential
- Knowledge of child development
- Knowledge of safeguarding children
Knowledge – Desirable
- Understanding of PECS and varying stages.
- Understanding of Sensory Processing Disorder.
- Knowledge of how to uphold Equality and Diversity policies and procedures
Skills – Essential
- Organised, with excellent planning and time management skills
- Strong and demonstrable people management skills
