Job Purpose

As a Night Support Worker at YMCA Together you will naturally be a night owl wanting to provide unconditional support and actively engaging with our residents throughout the night. Your role as a Night Support Worker will be to create a safe environment that empowers residents to make positive changes in their lives. 


Our Approach

YMCA Together operate a flexible approach with ‘elastic tolerance’ when supporting people in crisis. This allows us to swiftly build a therapeutic rapport and remove any barriers to people engaging with support.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Assisting our Support Practitioners in welcoming new residents in line with the service’s policies and procedures. 
  • Ensuring the basic needs of residents are met including good quality accommodation and facilities, healthy food, advice and guidance on health and wellbeing. 
  • Carrying out one to one discussions and developing calming and soothing evening activities with residents 
  • Responding to referrals and liaising with referring agencies 
  • Completing inductions with new arrivals to service 
  • Advocate for social inclusion of the people you support ensuring they are able to access health and financial support  
  • Assisting residents with housekeeping, welfare and room checks  
  • Prompting and observing medication be taken  
  • Written communication to our support teams on developments and updates that have happened throughout the night 
  • Work alongside the people in our services to address their physical and mental health issues, including engaging with primary and secondary health care providers including emergency services 
  • Ensuring all health and safety and maintenance issues are raised in a timely manner 
  • Participating in team meetings, supervisions and reflective practice encouraging open, honest and transparent feedback where continuous improvement is encouraged.

Health and Safety

  • To liaise with all emergency services when necessary
  • Ensure at all times the safety of yourself and others on the premises in which you work
  • To conduct nightly Health and Safety checks
  • To report, log and communicate all incidents to the appropriate people in line with YMCA Togethers license agreement
  • Tackle any nuisance caused by clients behaviour or their visitors, including the consequences of continuing with anti-social behaviour
  • Conduct welfare checks as specified during the shift
  • Ensure adherence to YMCA Together visitor’s policy and procedure
  • To adhere to all risk management protocols
  • Ensure that risk assessments are updated
  • Assisting service users in their personal hygiene and of their room
  • Conduct landing, welfare and observation checks as specified throughout the shift
  • Ensure that all communal and outside areas are clean and tidy
  • Cleaning and general tidying of the following areas; main office, reception area, main lobby, staff kitchen and facilities along with additional cleaning as required at weekends
  • Completion of daily handover after each shift.

Teamwork

  • To share information and expertise with the team, covering absence, and working together to provide a high-quality service
  • To contribute to the formulation of policy and procedures in relation to support services
  • To attend and participate in regular team meetings to ensure good communication.

Professional Practice and Development

  • Attend regular supervision sessions with the Service Manager or Team Leader in accordance with the supervision contract
  • Maintain good professional practice and ensure ongoing development, through use of supervision and training
  • Respect the confidentiality of clients using the service and be responsible for the security of personal and confidential information
  • Carry out all these duties within the organisation’s safety guidelines
  • Ensure personal records are correctly maintained
  • Ensure effective communication with staff within YMCA Together

Person Specification – Night Support Assistant


Experience

Essential

  • Ideally you will have a background of working within a charity, community project and/or previous involvement in the mental health or homeless sectorYou will have knowledge around supporting people with challenging and complex behaviours including substance misuse and Mental Health within a 24 hour residential support service 

Desirable

  • Experience of working within a psychologically informed environment (PIE) 

Knowledge

Essential

  • A basic understanding of relevant and appropriate legislation, including mental health, welfare benefits and housing law. An understanding of health and safety requirements in the workplace 

Desirable

  • Knowledge of working with a housing management IT system, databases and spreadsheets
  • Awareness of the barriers that members may display when accessing services.
  • Awareness of Benefit system, universal credit and welfare reform

Communication

Essential

  • Excellent communication, fostering a respectful, collaborative and professional approach to the people who you work alongside ensuring confidentiality at all times 

Empathy and Respect

Essential

  • The ability to empower people to make positive changes, showing empathy whilst maintaining professional boundaries
